Atlanta is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States and it is no wonder. The city has much to offer in the way of employment opportunities. It is a media and technology hub and skilled workers from all over the world flock to Atlanta to set up house. The fantastic weather also helps to solidify Atlanta’s popularity. The city is warm year round, making for easy access to outdoor activities and entertainment.
Atlanta is split into six main districts, each with its own style and rhythm. Learning more about the character of each district will help you home in on the area of the city that is right for you.
Downtown Atlanta encompasses the neighborhoods of Castleberry Hill, Sweet Auburn, Centennial Park, Five Points, and the Hotel District. The Downtown District is where all the action is in Atlanta. It includes most of the city’s night clubs and many of the most popular restaurants. Many of Atlanta’s most popular tourist attractions are here too: the Georgia Aquarium, CNN, and the Coca-Cola Museum. Downtown is the seat of the city’s and state’s government and is home to much of the commercial activity in the city. Housing choices are varied in the downtown but it consists predominantly of luxury condominiums and townhouses.
Midtown Atlanta lies just to the north of Downtown. It is predominantly a business district and contains many high rises with few options for residential housing. The Georgia Tech campus is also housed in Midtown.
South Atlanta includes the areas of Southeast Atlanta, Hapeville, Grant Park and Mechanicsville. Turner Field, the home of the Atlanta Braves, is in South Atlanta as is the Hartsfield-Jackson airport, one of the world’s busiest. Grant Park is one of Atlanta’s oldest neighborhoods, designed and built in the late 1800’s. It contains Atlanta’s widest array of historic homes and architectural styles, including Craftsmen, Italianate and Victorian. South Atlanta experienced a resurgence in urban restoration in the 1970’s that have allowed many of the historic homes to be preserved and gives the district its distinctive character.
West Atlanta is made up of the neighborhoods of Collier Heights, Historic West End, Bankhead, Vine City, and Upper Westside. It is perhaps the most diverse district in Atlanta with historic neighborhoods, high end subdivisions and its own restaurant and retail areas.
East Atlanta is the umbrella district for several diverse neighborhoods including Little Five Points, East Atlanta Village, Virginia-Highland, and Poncey-Highland. East Atlanta is still in a state of renewal and is becoming a trendy location for young professionals. Little Five Points is perhaps the most unusual and interesting neighborhood in the district. It has become an alternative haven for the modern art crowd and sports many shops and boutiques of trendy young goods. It has a concentration of vintage clothing stores that rivals any retail district in the South.
Buckhead is the fastest growing district in Atlanta. It is one of the most prestigious addresses in the country and has one of the highest average house prices in the United States. The governor’s mansion is in Buckhead as is an upscale shopping district visited by tourists from all over the country. Buckhead is the heart of Atlanta’s nightclub scene and has a “downtown” of its own.
